I own Preferred Pest Management in North Texas. I started the business at the end of October 2020, and I’m still learning what it takes to grow it well.
The business changes. So does the job.
Starting a business puts a lot of jobs on one person’s shoulders. You’re doing the work, answering customers, figuring out marketing, and trying to make the numbers work. Hiring adds a different set of questions: how do you train someone, communicate clearly, hold people accountable, and give them room to grow?
Those are the kinds of things I’m working through. My recent articles cover what I learned from hiring my first employees and how I’m putting AI agents to work on reporting, administration, and other parts of the business.
What I share here
- Business and leadership: hiring, communication, growth decisions, and the responsibilities that come with being the owner.
- Systems and follow-up: keeping track of leads, assigning responsibility, and making sure the next step actually happens.
- AI in business: the tools and workflows I’m trying, where they help, and where I still review the work myself.
Pest control is the business I know from doing it. A lot of the questions also apply to other service businesses: how to lead a small team, follow up with customers, and make better use of your time.
Why write about it?
It’s easy to get advice that sounds good until you have to use it. I want this site to give you something you can think through and put to work. That means sharing decisions, mistakes, examples, and the tradeoffs behind them.
I also publish videos and conversations with people who work in this space. The articles give those ideas a place you can come back to, read at your own pace, and use when the problem is in front of you.

Where this is going
Longer term, I plan to build a paid community here with group calls, individual calls, and in-person events. That’s a future offering. Right now, the best places to start are the articles and the email list.
